Born in a dermatology clinic

The idea of blemish balm came from German dermatology: patients recovering from peels and laser treatments needed a product that would soothe healing skin and cover redness at the same time. But it was the Korean industry that turned a clinical product into a beauty category.

Seoul, early 2000s

Hanskin was the first to adapt the formula for daily use: a light tinted product that doesn't paint over skin, but cares for it – evening tone, hydrating and protecting. The term "BB cream" was born, and by the end of the decade it had become shorthand for the Korean philosophy of beauty: skincare before makeup.

The category that changed the market

The BB cream's success set off a wave of hybrids – CC creams, cushions, tinted serums. Global corporations launched their own versions, but the principle stayed Korean: makeup should never harm the skin, it should be an extension of its care.

What it means for Hanskin today

Inventing the BB cream is not a museum piece – it's the brand's working principle. Every Hanskin formula is still tested against one question: does this care for the skin, or merely look like it does? PHA cleansing, multi-weight hyaluron and the ceramide barrier are the same logic, continued: efficacy with no compromise for the skin.
